uCoz is a free web hosting service with a built-in content management system (CMS). The different modules of the uCoz CMS (e.g. Blog platform, Forum platform etc.) can be used together to build a full-featured website, or alternatively, the modules can be used separately to create a Blog, a Forum, Photo Albums etc. Everyone can create a website for free with uCoz.

History

Initially a combined effort of several private developers in Russia and Ukraine produced a number of services such as a poll platform and a free Guestbook platform. A professional CMS script (WoCatalog Pro) was also introduced. After almost a year of development, on October 29, 2005, the first version of the system was launched in the Russian language. In June 2007, the English version started its official work, followed by the German version in August 2007 and by several other regional versions later on.

Today, uCoz remains especially popular in the Russian-speaking part of the Web. According to Alexa Internet rating of the most popular Russian sites, uCoz took the 8th place outranked only by popular news sites, search engines and e-mail services, making it by far the most popular CMS in the Russian-language segment of the Internet.


On April 16, 2010, the URL shortening service http://u.to was launched.

Current system features and capabilities

uCoz CMS platform currently includes the following free features available upon signing up:

  • Global uNet profile - gives access to all uNet websites without a separate registration;
  • More than 254 designs - can be used to create a website in minutes by using a template;
  • Customizable design - the possibility to make a custom design or customize an existing template;
  • 400 Mb of disk space - available upon registration; the disk space increases with the increase of the number of website visitors.
  • A third-level free domain - the possibility to choose from 18 different zones: ucoz.com, ucoz.net, ucoz.org, ucoz.ru, ucoz.de, ucoz.ua, ucoz.co.uk, ucoz.kz, ucoz.lv, at.ua, 3dn.ru, m1.ru, clan.su, moy.su, do.am, ucoz.es, ucoz.hu, ucoz.ae;
  • Custom domain - the possibility to attach an existing domain (that already belongs to the user) to the website;
  • Creation/editing of MX records and creation of subdomains - available after a custom domain has been attached;
  • FTP access;
  • Technical Support ;
  • WYSIWYG - an online visual editor;
  • Backup - backing up of website files and design templates;
  • RSS import and export;
  • Awards for site users;
  • Automatic creation of a sitemap file;
  • Builder - allows easy adding/editing of blocks on your website and changing of their display order in visual mode.

Modules

uCoz CMS platform includes modules that can be used to create a fully customized website; alternatively, some modules can be used separately to create a blog, a photo gallery, a forum etc. All of them can be installed in website Control Panel. Below is the list of currently available modules.

  • Site Catalog - a catalog of sites quoted by users;
  • Ad Board - ads management system;
  • FAQ - frequently asked questions;
  • Tests - testing of website users;
  • Web Polls - polling of website members;
  • E-mail Forms - creating of a customizable form for email inquiries by site visitors;

uToolbar add-on has toolbar buttons that provide easier and safer signing-in to uCoz websites and allow moving of Admin Bar/User Bar onto the toolbar.

U.TO is a new url shortening service that uCoz launched u.to on April 16 2010 , this is an easy and useful new uCoz service that is integrated in all the uCoz websites. Through the use of the service reduction options you get a short alternative URL, which is not only easier to use, but also much easier to remember. Also, the service can be useful in terms of SEO, since its use reduces the number of inbound links to your site. In addition, use of abbreviations reduces the possibility of errors in the transmission links, because it is often enough if you copy the long link to make a mistake on one or two characters, and a link will be broken.
